Michael Larson
Been with the MSO since: 1993
Hometown: Minden, Nebraska
Education: B.A. Mass Media Communications (minors in music and theatre), and Master of Music performance degree for the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music
My day job: staff carpenter, Guthrie Theater
Earliest musical memory: Listening my dad's bands
Favorite thing about performing music: I enjoy picking up my horn every day and playing better than I did the day before
Other instruments I play: I play the entire trombone family; alto, tenor, and bass. and euphonium. Also some harmonica
The composition I would most like to perform: Symphony #3 by Gustav Mahler
Best part about being an MSO musician: I'm of an opinion that 99.9% of all musicians have to be ensemble musicians, we can't all be soloists..... The MSO gives me that outlet, and I'm thrilled to be part of this orchestra, especially since we hired Ken Freed to lead us. He's brought a whole new level of professionalism and excellence to our little orchestra. We're actually growing and improving with every concert.
What's on my iPod or in my CD player: A wide variety of classical; Mahler #5 (prepping for this season) , The Pittsburgh Symphony's CD of the 4 Brahms syms. The American Brass quintet, The Vienna Trombone Quartet, A couple of big bands, ....and William Shatner.
